"As chairman of the Republican party, he appointed the first woman in history to serve as deputy chairman. As Senate Republican Leader, he appointed the first woman in history to serve as Secretary of  the Senate - the chief administrative officer of the Senate. He was also the first Senate Leader in history - Republican or Democrat - to have a woman as chief of staff.

In his leadership office, his top advisers on policy issues like health care, taxes, the environment and foreign policy are all women. And at the Dole for President campaign, his finance director and his political director are just two of the many women who play leadership roles."  (Elizabeth Dole about her husband, Bob Dole.)

Dole: Hollywood Should Help Veterans  By TOM RAUM
 Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former presidential candidate
Bob Dole suggested Friday that the nation's film industry could do more to help veterans. ``They've made a lot of money making World War II movies,'' he told a Senate hearing. ``So far, they've kept it.''

Dole softened his testimony to the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee to single out actor Tom Hanks for praise. Hanks, who played a starring role in the 1998 hit movie ``Saving Private Ryan,'' has been helpful in raising funds for a $100 million World War II memorial to be built in the nation's
capital, Dole said.

Woman President Good Way to Start the New Millenium

WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 —  Former presidential nominee and Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole said Tuesday night that even though his wife, Elizabeth, hasn't fully made up her mind to run for president in 2000, he can think of no better  way to start the millennium than with a qualified woman as president.

By Jim Abrams The Associated Press WASHINGTON,  Nov. 2 — Bob Dole says the Repuliican Party should consider putting a woman on the 2000 presidential ticket, and he suggested that his wife, Elizabeth, would make an ideal candidate.

Bob Dole, the failed Republican presidential candidate, said Sunday his party needs to think about having a woman on the presidential ticket if it is to close the gender gap

Bob Dole a funny guy? You be the judge, based on a speech he made Tuesday before an arts society.Of his purchase of the Watergate apartment where Monica Lewinsky once lived: ``For two years I lived next door to Monica. I didn't know it at the time. Now we're going to buy that place, and I'll be giving tours on weekends.''
On a possible run for president by his wife, Elizabeth: ``If she decides to do it, she'll be the candidate and I'll do what she's done for me the past two times - stand there smiling while she makes the same speech over and over and over.''

WOMEN NEED NOT FEAR BOB DOLE'S CANDIDACY

What makes it easy for voters to overlook Dole's pro-women record is his leadership of the Republicans' efforts to cut taxes and reduce the size and role of government. Those who believe in a welfare/entitlement state and trying to solve most problems by throwing federal tax dollars at them can spin Republican positions into a seeming lack of compassion and favoritism toward the rich.
Most of the people on welfare are women. Women have traditionally been the victims of discrimination in the job market. Women are most likely to be left as single parents or displaced homemakers or elderly widows with a case for government help and the conviction that Democrats will be most likely to provide it. Much of the feminist movement has been aligned with Democrats and the political left.

Elizabeth Dole explains husband's views to women

Elizabeth Dole wowed women of the Delaware Valley, something polls indicate her husband Bob hasn't been able to do, when she spoke about him at the Philadelphia Women's Luncheon at the Twelve Caesars.

Dole herself became a favorite among many members of the Republican Party.

Dole left jobs four times in her career to work for her husband's unsuccessful campaigns for the vice presidency (1976) and the presidency (1980, 1988, and 1996). During the 1996 campaign, however, Dole herself became a favoriteamong many members of the Republican Party. copyright © 1998 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.

In the 'Dole World' Of Indecision, Small Steps Became a Run
 By Bob Woodward

There was much less pressure, fewer people standing in line to see him, he could wear casual sports clothes. His first appointment was at 9 a.m. with his wife, Elizabeth.
"Okay, Bob," she had said several days before, "let's set aside a few quiet hours and let's just look at some of this in more detail." They had been married 19 years, and she wanted to discuss, systematically and at length, the possibility that he was going to run for president a third time

'Where's the outrage?'' he bellowed again and again in 1996.

These days, from his law offices in downtown Washington, his miniature schnauzer, leader, a bit frail and suffering from vertigo but still yapping, the former Senate leader from Kansas says the answer has finally sunk in: there is no outrage.

Mr. Dole also castigated women's groups that attacked Clarence Thomas at his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court and Senator Bob Packwood as sexual predators but have remained relatively quiet about Mr. Clinton.
''Maybe Packwood should be reinstated,'' he said of the Oregon Republican who quit in 1995 after the Senate Ethics Committee voted unanimously to recommend that he be expelled over accusations that he had forced himself on women.

Of Mr. Clinton, he said, ''People said, 'He's married to the same woman -- that's more than Bob Dole can say.' ''

(For the record, Yah Lin Trie, Mr. Clinton's friend who is a central figure in the fund-raising scandal, is down the hall from the Doles, as is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg of the Supreme Court.)

No Problem, Liberal magazines have all but ignored ethical controversies engulfing the Clintons.

By Ken Silverstein-Excerpted from AJR, October 1996

"AN ABUSE OF POWER IS an abuse of power whether committed by Republicans or Democrats.... Whitewater and Travelgate are a litmus test for liberals of their commitment to honesty in government. Do they have one standard, or two?"

"Instead of adhering to the single standard Ireland demanded, the liberal press has pandered to its readers by serving up heaping portions of GOP sacrificial lamb while largely  ignoring everything from the Clinton administration's ethical standards to the Democratic Party's reliance on corporate campaign money."

‘The Nation accuses Elizabeth Dole of playing politics during her tenure at the Red Cross by, for example, giving "frequent speeches about her born-again Christian commitment" to help shore up her husband's "standing with the Christian Right."Meanwhile, the liberal magazines have brushed aside scandals involving Hillary Rodham Clinton, with The Nation labeling Travelgate a "petty affair" and a Mother Jones article referring to Mrs.Clinton's infamous commmodity trades as "a minor embarrassment."'

"Criticizing Clinton in editorials and columns is fine, but it doesn't explain why these magazines have so rarely unleashed their investigative resources on the president and Democratic targets, as they spare no effort at turning up dirt on the GOP. With Clinton's administration having been investigated by four independent counsels, a record for any presidency, such a posture seems all the more hypocritical."
