Will She Or Won't She? Elizabeth Dole's Supporters Line Up for 2000 Race Cheering supporters urge Elizabeth Dole to run for president during a Draft Dole Rally in her hometown of Salisbury, N.C. Dole did not attend the Jan. 23 event. (Nell Redmond/AP Photo) By Gayle Tzemach CNEWS.com W A S H I N G T O N,   Feb. 2  "I think Mrs. Dole would greatly restore the office of the presidency," says GOP pollster Linda DiVall, whose polls show Dole running strong in New Hampshire and nationwide. DiVall notes that Dole's strengths could boost the party's weaknesses.
"One of the perception problems the Republican Party faces is: Are they caring and compassionate?" she says. Dole's strong Christian faith paired with her Cabinet and non-profit administrative experience "demonstrates a humanitarian aspect that is sorely lacking with the party," DiVall says. "She has an excellent opportunity to bridge the gap with the social conservatives and with the fiscal conservatives."

Dole speech could be campaign tune-up February 3, 1999 BY ALEX RODRIGUEZ STAFF REPORTER Back in the early 1970s when she was in the Nixon administration, Elizabeth Dole walked up to the doorman outside the males-only Metropolitan Club in Washington, introduced herself, and said she had a fourth-floor meeting with a group of lawyers from Cleveland.

``Lady, if your name were Queen Elizabeth, you're not getting into this club,'' the doorman snapped. Dole sent a male colleague to the meeting, a capable person who nonetheless wasn't nearly as prepared as Dole was.

And though she didn't say it, it's clear she believes the country is not only ready for its first woman president, it needs one.

JANUARY 28, 22:02 EST -Changing of the GOP guard highlights annual Kansas Day weekend  By LEW FERGUSON- AP Political Writer
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — ``Happy Days Are Here Again'' may have been Democrat Franklin Roosevelt's theme song, but moderate Kansas Republicans can be excused if they borrow it for their big political party this weekend.
Dole will speak at the Republican Veterans Club luncheon Saturday. He also likely will stop by a hospitality room set up by Earl Cox in the Downtown Ramada Inn where the annual Kansas Day events will unfold starting with the annual Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas dinner tonight.
Cox has said he hopes Mrs. Dole announces her intentions by Monday, but there is no indication that she will so in Topeka. She is not scheduled to attend the Kansas Day activities.

JANUARY 27, 00:41 EST - Dole in talks with top New York GOP consultant By MARC HUMBERT -  AP Political Writer ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — In a fresh sign of her possible interest in running for president, Elizabeth Dole has engaged in talks with a top New York political strategist about joining her team, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Nonetheless, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Mahoney was in talks with Mrs. Dole. They also said Pataki had been informed by Mahoney last week that the Dole camp had made him an offer and that he planned to accept it.
Mahoney is no stranger to Elizabeth Dole. He served as Northeast regional coordinator for Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign and his influence with the campaign stretched far beyond that job.
Should Mahoney go to work for Mrs. Dole, it is unclear what that would say about Pataki's possible ambitions. There has been speculation that Pataki's real interest is in the vice presidential slot, not running for president yet.

Lewinsky's Gone, and the Neighbors Gain January 28, 1999 By THE NEW YORK TIMES WASHINGTON -- The husband and wife have lived in Washington for quite a while and wanted a bigger place. Rather than move out of the apartment they have grown used to they decided to buy the one next door and tear down the wall. Presto, more space.

The couple are Bob and Elizabeth Dole, and the next-door apartment they are acquiring in the Watergate complex was occupied until recently by a young woman named Monica Lewinsky and her mother, Marcia Lewis, who rented it from the owner.

JANUARY 21, 02:01 EST George Pataki setting up PACs; to increase national travel  By MARC HUMBERT AP Political Writer  ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — With advisers saying he is eyeing a possible presidential run, Gov. George Pataki has created political
action committees to finance trips across the country in the coming months.

The New York Republican said Wednesday that his stepped-up travel plans were ``not about a specific person's candidacy at all,'' but reflected his desire to increase his influence over the direction of the party nationally.
Pataki's strengths include his ability to raise money quickly as governor of New York and the fact that only California has more presidential electoral votes. He is also known as the man who brought down former Gov. Mario Cuomo...
